31 March - Highway 87 between Brady and Mason. Highway 190 between Brady and San Saba, FM Highway 765, Highway 377 between Brady and Brownwood.

Burnet

10 March: Bloom sighting reported about 6-8 miles out from 29 on 234

Early

23 April - The Wildflowers on Hwy. 279 are pretty good, turn right off of Hwy. 279 on FM 2632 for some beautiful areas. Mostly bluebonnets, but light mixes of a variety of flowers. As always 765 off of Hwy. 377 S. is covered with Bluebonnets. This seems to be a fantastic year in our area, due to all of the rain.

Fredericksburg

April 15 - I, your humble webmaster, saw quite a few patches of flowers while I was on the road the last week or so. There were some nice patches between Fredericksburg, Stonewall & Johnson City, along 290. Also between Llano & Burnet on 29 - be sure to see if the eagles are still in their nest if you come along this way! Also, a friend reported this- the wildflowers are pretty on 965 from a couple miles south of entrance to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area northward to Highway 16 intersection.
Most of what I saw were bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes, some pink primroses, a few bull nettle, and some other small white & yellow flowers.

April 13 - There are nice flowers blooming in the median along 281 from 1604 to about Spring Branch. Mixture of bluebonnets and others

April 7 - Reports are that the Willow City Loop on 16 North going towards Llano is very beautiful right now

March 29 - A few small patches of bluebonnets blooming on 290 East between Stonewall and Fredericksburg. There are also some on Highway 281 median somewhere around Guadalupe River crossing.

May 19 - many beautiful flowers along 16 north towards Llano - Indian blankets and others.

Lampasas

31 March - There are some on Highway 281 from Burnet to Lampasas.

Mason

April 23 - Unbelievably, bluebonnets are still bloomin in many areas of Mason County. Usually late spring heat waves have burned them up by now, but here are some pretty drives still looking good. The James River Road drive has many extensive areas of bluebonnets, joined by white prickly poppies and other spring flowers. That road has free-ranging cattle so there are plentiful photo ops of cows, calves and flowers.

FM 386 north from Mason to Fredonia has many bar ditches filled with blankets of blue, interspersed with paintbrushes and white yarrow. At Fredonia, the visitor can turn left on FM 1222 and follow it west through Camp Air & Katemcy to its intersection with Hwy 29 headed west to Menard. There are many interesting cattle and livestock along this route, including a Scottish Highland cow and a camel that were recently sighted. The section of Hwy 29 west from FM 1222 to the county line features many unusual wildflowers not found in the rest of the county. The Native Plant Society visits this area frequently, updating its lists of local flora.

April 15 -
Recent rains and cool temps have prolonged the bluebonnet bloom in Mason County, which should continue through the end of the month. FM 386 between Fredonia and Mason in northwestern Mason County is particularly pretty.

April 8 report:

Its strange but this year the North Side of town is in full bloom. The best place to go right now is the following:

From the square, take 377 N (towards Brady) to 1222 (about 10 miles N). Turn right on 1222 to 386. Turn right on 386 and continue to FM 2618. Turn right on FM 2618 to FM 1900, turn right to 29 W towards Mason.

If you have our Country Lanes Brochure, this is Drive #1 modified. The flowers south of town are about two weeks away from peak. If you have further questions, please let us know

March report:
Bluebonnets Are Bustin Out in Mason County!

Fate led me to drive to Austin from Mason yesterday (March 19th), so I headed down one of my favorite routes, taking Hwy 29 east to Llano and Hwy 71 on to Austin. All along the road, little sparks of blue caught my attention, hinting at the glory that the roadways will present to passerbys over the next few weeks. Spring rains and mild weather have spurred a sudden growth in the bluebonnet plants and the first blooms are appearing. On the return trip, I traveled Hwy 290 to Fredericksburg but saw few flowers until I took Hwy 87 north to Mason, where the bluebonnets began appearing as I entered Mason County. The heat from the highways encourages early development along the roadside.

If you have the time to visit Mason, com on because the bluebonnets are blooming all over town and they will be glorious for several weeks. Other spring bulbs and wildflowers are also blooming within the city. And, as you drive along the highways, watch for the redbuds and the wild Mexican plums, which are both encased in blooms. The redbuds close to Austin are starting to leaf out but out here in the country, theyre in full color, unspoiled by those little green leaves.

San Saba

20 April - San Saba County is in full bloom! All Hwy's, 16 N & S and 190 E & W are beautiful. A particularly great drive is Hwy 16 S from San Saba to Chearokee, west on CR 501 to Pontotoc. Lots of old buildings and gorgeous flowers. Then take your pick: 71 to Brady or 71 to Llano or CR 386 to Mason. There are great photo opportunities. A variety of flowers including bluebonnets, Mexican hats, daisy, wild verbenia - you name it and you will probably see it! The previous Bend drive is still beautiful also.Lots of motorcycles through town this weekend touring, and we welcome more............

18 April - County road 580. Turn south off of Hwy 190. Off of CR 580 tak CR 434 to to Chappel and 501 to Cherokee.

31 March " All along Hwy 16 the ditches are blooming, the fields are just beginning to peek through. Mill Pond Park is beginning to bloom in town.

18 May - Highways 190 & 16 area just beautiful - lots of Mexican hat & poppies!
